We learn a fair bit about early church history, and also some of the workings zsensi the Vatican. Once in the mode of interpreting Dante as a roadmap to solving seven deadly puzzles, I found the book to become a bit boring.
This is an intelligent, well-researched book and it was a great deal of fun. The main character, Ottavia, is a high-ranking nun working in the Vatican.

I was a bit turned off when the main character, a nun, falls in love. Her books, of an indubitable quality and proven historical documentation, have been translated to 15 languages. Relics of the True Cross from across the world have been disappearing, and an obscure religious order is suspected of collecting them.
